MA Design For Textile Futures: Clementine

Last week Offset Warehouse visited the Central St Martin's graduate show, where we discovered (and snapped up) the talented textile designer, Clementine. She'll be featured on our Ethical Database as a freelance textile and print designer from September.

She talked to us a bit about the gorgeous woven textiles she had on display. The project was called "See Your Space", which is exactly what the textiles did: they were literally a snap shot of an interior space, creating a trompe l'oeil illusion of depth - a room within a room if you like.

To create exciting, linear designs, Clementine integrated different patterns seen in common illusion theories, like Fraser’s optical illusion, to create her original interior surfaces, which were then photographed and manipulated into new forms. Photography became a strong element in her work and she favored digital tools such as digital printing and jacquard weaving.

She then discovered that using the finished textiles to repeat the process, created an even more exciting result, and she continued this cyclical design process, which she aptly named a "Loop Process".

She spoke about her sustainable attitude towards textiles, "Textile is more than just being a fabric, print, weave or structure. It is everywhere in our daily life. We start and end our lives with it. Its future is being defined by us. We are in a very digital time where people spend most of their time online, and the virtual is in some cases taking over the real world. However, one thing will always remain. This desire to be able to touch, feel, wear, decorate with something real. Cloth. The future is about bringing together worlds which once seemed separate like technology and traditional crafts but are so close to bringing the best to us, working hand in hand to offer us a more sustainable industry. Textile design today is ground-breaking, and will be breaking more and more unforeseen boundaries."
